In Memory of Assoc. Professor James Kagaari (1955–2025)
Assoc. Professor James R.K. Kagaari, a distinguished Ugandan academic and psychologist, passed away on 13 May 2025. His death marks a profound loss for the academic and professional communities in Uganda and beyond. Known for his pioneering spirit, profound insight, and unwavering dedication, Professor Kagaari leaves behind a legacy of scholarship, mentorship, and service.
Professor Kagaari’s academic journey began in engineering but evolved into a lifelong dedication to psychology. His transition across disciplines reflected both intellectual curiosity and a desire to serve humanity in deeper and more meaningful ways. As an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Kyambogo University, and a part-time lecturer at Makerere University Business School, he touched countless lives through his teaching, research, and leadership.
His research interests centred on human resource management, performance systems, assessment centres, and psychological well-being, particularly within Ugandan enterprises and institutions. His work was often characterised by its relevance to real-world challenges, addressing issues of individual adaptability, psychological capital, and workplace resilience. His rigorous studies helped shape institutional practices and inspired many other researchers in the region.
Beyond his academic duties, Professor Kagaari held numerous professional roles. He served as President of the Uganda Council of Psychologists and was recognised internationally as a Fellow of the International Association of Applied Psychology. His involvement in global psychological initiatives, including serving on the IAAP Board of Directors and its Task Force on Global Terrorism, highlighted his commitment to advancing psychology as a tool for peace, resilience, and social betterment.
Professor Kagaari was deeply respected for his mentorship. Generations of students, scholars, and practitioners benefited from his wisdom, encouragement, and integrity. He believed in the transformative power of education and invested wholeheartedly in developing future leaders who would carry forward the values he championed.
The funeral service was held at Kakumba Chapel, Kyambogo University, attended by colleagues, students, family, and friends, all of whom bore testimony to his gentle nature and profound impact. He was laid to rest in his home village of Rwikymiro, Kantookye, Ruhaama, Ntungamo District, a return to the roots that shaped his identity and strength.
Assoc. Professor James Kagaari will be remembered not only for his academic contributions but for his humanity, vision, and service to society. He stood at the intersection of theory and practice, embodying the principle that knowledge must be used in the service of others. His legacy lives on in the institutions he helped shape, the research he produced, and the many lives he transformed. He will be sorely missed.
